Is It Time for a Major Career Change?

post-img

Change is a flowing, constant, inevitable fact of life.

Yet, it remains a point of fear and anxiety for so many. We know change will happen, whether we like it or not, so why are we so resistant?

Careers pose the biggest threat to change. Traditionally, an individual settles down with a company and works a particular job for the duration of their adulthood. There is no question or idea of switching companies, let alone industry or career path!

Nevertheless, times are changing and today’s workforce has bigger and better aspirations. Maintaining a job to pay the bills and survive simply isn’t enough; workers attribute passion, interest and innovation as top-tier criteria in their careers.

Can you say with full certainty, you are happy in your career? Or, are you simply getting by, doing a job, you are not truly interested or remotely passionate about?

Consider these tell-tale signs it’s time for a switch; then ask yourself: “Am I up for the challenge?”

1. You Are Relentlessly Exhausted

There’s tired, and then there’s exhausted. Tired is something you might feel after a late night out or a long run. Exhaustion is compounded fatigue and lethargy, based on more than just lack of sleep.

You spend the majority of your waking hours working, and if the work you’re doing makes you chronically unhappy, your body will start responding.

It could be the line of work, your coworkers, the office environment or a combination of many things, but something is off, and it’s time for a change.

2. Salary Can’t Compensate for Your Unhappiness

The top reason most people don’t leave their unhappy jobs is the paycheck. The idea of giving up a comfortable, reliable stream of income for the unknown is unfathomable to some people.

Open your eyes to your own capabilities, opportunities and intelligence, and realize you can make the money you want, without sacrificing your happiness.

It won’t happen overnight or with the snap of your fingers, but with the right drive and passion, you can have the best of both worlds.

3. You’ve Become Very Good at Work You Dislike

What a wake-up call! Perhaps it’s been years or decades in the same industry, and you’ve become the clear expert in your field; but the catch is, you hate the work you do.

Whether it’s rooted in a sheer disinterest or boredom, it’s time to get out and set your focus on a fulfilling, worthwhile career. Which leads us into our next point…

4. Your Skills and Talents Aren’t Being Put to Their Best Use

You may be an excellent presenter and connect really well with audiences or in team meetings, yet it’s the topic which falls short.

What if you could transfer your best skills to a cause you’re passionate about? Imagine the possibilities!

Ask yourself two questions:

  • What am I good at?
  • What am I passionate about?

The intersection of these two questions is where you should be directing your focus.
